“On December 5th two day’s prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Hawaii, the leaders of Naples and Collier county had been notified by the CAA ( Civil Aeronautics Administration) that Naples was #2 on the list of Fl. airports to be constructed.

But 2 days later, the confusion and devastation of the attack on pearl harbor changed the original intention and time plan. Plans to build a landing strip or small sub base were converted to plans for a full-sized Army base. The purpose and intention of the recently purchased land were to accommodate the federal declaration of war and America’s need for training pilots, gunners, enlisted and officers, in the craft of defense.”
